TL;DR: Emergency Chocolate Ingestion: Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to dogs. If your dog has eaten chocolate, do not wait for symptoms. Call Best Care Vets immediately at (03) 9799 8000.
It’s a scenario every dog owner dreads: you leave a block of chocolate on the kitchen counter, look away for a minute, and find nothing left but a torn wrapper.
Why is Chocolate Dangerous?
Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs cannot metabolize efficiently. Toxicity depends on your dog’s weight, the type of chocolate, and the amount ingested. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate.
If caught early, our veterinary team can safely induce vomiting to clear toxins before they enter the bloodstream, followed by supportive care and blood testing.
Critical Vet Note: Do not wait for clinical signs to appear. If you know or strongly suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, call Best Care Vets Beaconsfield immediately.
